Through or Around

This is a poem by my friend and neighbor, Maria Rosales. We are using it this Sunday, June 14 as the theme for our monthly Take the Reins gathering. We come together online on the second Sunday of every month during this Year of the Horse to explore the intersection of “horse wisdom” with our own daily lives.

Through or Around
By Maria Rosales

There may be an actual door
or a gate, perhaps a passageway
between buildings
but often there is nothing
but a feeling so solid
it might as well need a giant key
or a complicated dial needing
just the right number of turns and clicks
to release, engage the mechanism of dread
and swing open.
This familiar hesitation
automatic fear and fright
mechanisms so old they rust
my feet in place.
It’s as if I’m riding a horse that shies
from sheets that flap in the wind
expecting danger to leap from every hedge.
So often, my anxious mind begs to go around
But the only way through is through
And so I grab my reins,
Kick gently with my heels
You can do it, old girl, let’s go.

If you would like to practice taking the reins and stepping through the places you feel stuck alongside an incredible community, we would love to have you!
