The Back StoryIt was one day as I was riding my horse along the beach in Baja that it hit me. I finally recognized a feeling I hadn’t felt in more than twenty years—the exact sense of deep depletion I had back when I was running ragged in my corporate life.
How was that possible? My life could not look more different than it had during those frantic corporate days. Now I was living in Baja, surrounded by a rural paradise of ocean and ranch. It was many people’s ‘dream’ life. And yet, there I was, in the midst of paradise, feeling exhausted and stuck.
I realized—I had changed everything about my scenery, but I hadn’t changed my self. That ‘hurry within’ that had dogged me during my corporate days had simply been laying dormant.
When I was in my twenties and had felt this way, I decided to ‘burn it all down’—to quit my job, pack my life into an SUV, and move across the country. I thought I had ‘made the transition.’ As though there was only one.
But this time, more than two decades later, I didn’t want to ‘burn it all down’ again. I liked my life. I had horses. Fruit trees. Those things are harder to fit in the back of an SUV.
So, I began to look for a way through. I began to make small changes, which I have come to call The Return.
Slowly, over time, those small practices began to gain momentum. The ‘burn it all down’ feelings began to fade, and the ‘what can we build next’ energy began to grow. Today, I feel a deep sense of connection, agency, and creative flow.
It is too good to keep to myself. I want to share the map with you.

Hi, I’m Erin!
I’m a writer, photographer, horsewoman, and ordained "Tentmaking Evangelist" in the Presbyterian Church (just like Mr. Rogers!). After years in the corporate world and leading a spiritual community featured in TIME magazine, I now spend my time in the garden, with my horses, or walking my dogs when I am not writing.
My work—whether with the horses, behind the lens, or on the page—is simply to amplify the good. For the last fifteen years, I’ve lived in the "scenery" of a dream, but it took a long time to learn that the scenery doesn't save you—the stance does.
